Membership FAQ

Do I need to own a sailboat to join?
No. You may want to consider joining the club as an Associate member first to see if you enjoy the club and sailing. You can volunteer to crew for other club members to see if sailing is something you really want to do and to get an idea what size boat you might want to purchase. Once you purchase a boat and store it at the club you can no longer be an Associate member and must convert to a Regular membership. (You can only be an Associate member for two years but you can convert to a Regular member at any time within those two years.)

I don’t know how to sail but want to learn. Can anyone at the club teach me?
Almost any of our members would be happy to accompany you on your boat to teach you how to sail. There’s a saying, “I can teach you to sail in half an hour, but it takes a lifetime to master.” We’ll take care of the “teaching” part; the “mastering” part is up to you!

Do you have space for my sailboat?
Yes. We have both spaces for boats in our boat yard along with open moorings. There is a waiting list for a wet slip.  Depending on the size of your boat, we will help you determine the best storage option.

Can I store a power boat or jet ski’s at the club?
No. Sorry, past experience has shown some only join the club to have a place to store and launch their power boats and really have minimal to no interest in sailing. The purpose of our club is to promote sailing.

If I join can I bring guests?
Absolutely! Guests are permitted on club premises only when accompanied by a member.

What facilities does the club have?
We currently have a boat yard, moorings, a lift for boat maintenance, a two-vehicle wide ramp, three docks, a pavilion for picnicking, a small-boat rack for club and youth program boats, restrooms with flushing toilets, and primitive camping areas. Future plans include a club house, showers and other modern touches.

How do I join the Dixie Sailing Club?
We like all potential members to visit the club and meet some of existing members and the fill out and sign an application and include a check for the one-time membership fee, and mail both to the address at the bottom of the application. The board of directors will review your application and if approved, you will become a member.

What does it cost to join DSC?
It depends on which membership category you select. For a Regular membership there is a one-time membership fee of $250 and monthly dues are $60. We have lower membership fees and monthly dues for Associate, Junior, and Collegiate members. Active duty military members also enjoy a lower membership fee but pay the regular $60 per month dues. The type membership you select determines whether or not you can store a boat at the club, vote during annual meetings, and hold office. We do expect all members to participate on work parties and to help with race committee.
