Each year the club schedules four regattas, on is an open regatta, for sailors from all over the region, and three are club regattas open only to club members. The open regatta is in the spring, the Punch Bowl and has been held for over 59 consecutive years. Trophies for the regatta are presented to the racers at the conclusion of the event. The three club regattas are the Frostbite Regatta to start the years racing program, in late February. Regattas are also scheduled for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and the trophy for the winner of each club regatta is presented at the next Commodore’s Banquet. These regattas are as follows:

Frostbite Regatta

This is the club’s first sanctioned sailing event of the season. It is normally held in late February or early March. Because we are in the South, some years you need to wear shorts and other years you need your winter foulies, but everyone enjoys dusting off the cobwebs and getting the boats on the water.

Punch Bowl Regatta

When Dixie Sailing Club was formed in the early 1960’s the minutes of the first board meeting reflect that the club wanted to have a regatta in the spring for the sailors in the region. The minutes of that meeting state that the regatta will be call The Punch Bowl Regatta. Over the years the event drew as many as 50 boats, including one skippered by Americas Cup skipper Ted Turner. The 50th consecutive annual event of the regatta was held in March 2012. The regatta was not held for a few years as the club moved to the new location, but resumed in 2015 and will continue in the future.

McFadden Cup

Joe and Marianne McFadden were long time members and dedicated racers in DSC in the 70’s and on. Joe was a retired Navy pilot who then became the political reporter for the Montgomery papers. He raced a number of boats, prime being the Flying Scot, with Marianne as crew. This trophy was sponsored by the McFadden family in memory of their participation in the DSC racing program. The trophy for the winner is presented by the Commodore at the next Commodore’s Banquet.

Nora Munger Trophy

Gene and Nora Munger were members of the club way back when – in the 1960’s – and in honor of his wife and her support of his racing endeavors Gene donated a trophy in her name to the winner of the Labor Day weekend regatta. Like the McFadden Cup, the trophy for the winner is presented by the Commodore at the next Commodore’s Banquet.
