Youth Sailing Camp 2026
This summer, the Dixie Sailing Club Youth Program will once again conduct youth sailing camps for youth 7 – 17 at the Dixie Sailing Club from 9-12 June and 23-26 June. The 9 am-3 pm sessions will cover basic sailing skills, water safety, and STEM sessions. The fee is $125, with a discount available for siblings or friends who register simultaneously. If you’d like more information, drop us a note at dscypmail@gmail.com.
Here are a few items to know about our sailing camps…
- Dates: 9-12 June and 23-26 June 2026, Tuesday through Friday.
- The 1st session will be tailored to new sailors, concentrating on getting them comfortable with the concepts of sailing, and giving them confidence out on the water.
- The 2nd session will be structured for sailors returning from previous camps. This allows us to emphasize advanced skills during the 2nd session.
- If your camper is new to sailing, but due to your summer plans, they can only attend the 2nd session, we can be flexible and work around your plans.
- Weather: In central Alabama, the wind can be light or variable in June, which is not always ideal for sailing. As sailing in light wind is a skill to develop, we endeavor to teach the kids to read the wind and sail in very little wind. Then they will be better prepared to sail into stronger winds. We will not be on the water with the threat of storms; we wait for the showers to end before returning. If the weather prevents further activities that day, we will call the person listed on the contact sheet. We are scheduling the camps for 4 days, anticipating that the weather may cancel sailing for one day. The camp ends on Thursday, if we don’t lose a day for weather.
- Times: 9 AM to 3 PM daily. Please be prompt, as we have a full day of activities.
- Meals: Students should bring their lunch and snacks.
- Water: Bottled water is furnished; proper hydration is essential.
- Tee-Shirts: Long-sleeved sailing camp tee-shirts are included in the fee. Please indicate the appropriate T-shirt size on the application form.
- Personal Gear: Students should bring a properly fitting PFD [life preserver], sunblock lotion, a wide-brimmed hat, beach shoes, a swimsuit, a towel, and a dry change of clothes.
- Parents: Parents, siblings, and friends may attend the presentations and relax under our pavilion. Parents frequently join in sailing themselves.
- Swimming: Students should be comfortable swimming in deep water and be able to swim unassisted for 100 ft.
- Ages: The class is open to ages 7-17, with most kids in the 10/12-year range.
- Class: Classes are limited to 15 students.
- Location: Dixie Sailing Club, 767 New Hope Church Road, Alex City, AL 35010. We are on Google Earth and most other mapping apps.
- Cost: The camp rate is $125 per session, with a $15 discount for additional siblings or friends. Payment may be made via PayPal, check, or cash. Payment must be received by 1 May 26 to hold the reservation. Campers may register for both sessions.
